(Orden de Vasco Nuñez de Balboa). Instituted 1937. 1937 - Present Issue. A fine eight armed star in silver, composed of multiple rays, obverse centrepiece in bronze gilt consisting of an enameled white four-armed cross, surrounded by a detailed laurel wreath in green enamels, centre depicting a superposed bronze gilded bust of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa surrounded by the inscription ORDER OF VASCO NUÑEZ DE BALBOA on a white enameled background, the reverse with pin assembly, silver hallmark denoting fineness of 925, measuring 81.22 mm (w) x 81.10 mm (h), presenting minor toned silver, otherwise extremely fine. Footnote: The Order of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa was founded in Panama by presidential decree in 1937 to reward national and foreigners for meritorious services rendered to the country in the fields of diplomacy and international relations. The Grand Cross is exclusively granted to Secretaries of State and Ambassadors.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
