Saxony, Kingdom. An Albrecht Order, Commander’s Cross with Swords, c.1916

(Albrecht-Orden, Komturkreuz mit Schwertern). Instituted 1850 by King Friedrich August II of Saxony. (1914-1918 Issue). A fine silver gilt award featuring a white enameled Christ Cross, with green laurels detailed with red enameled berries, with silver gilt swords in each quadrant, obverse presenting with a central medallion composed of a gilt relief of Duke Albrecht III of Saxony inside a blue enameled ring bearing the Order’s Motto of “ALBERTUS ANIMOSUS” (“ALBERT THE MERCIFUL”), reverse with a central medallion composed of a crowned royal coat of arms in silver gilt and enamels, surrounded by a blue enameled ring bearing the Order’s institution date of “1850”, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, unmarked, measuring 52.93 mm (w) x 89.02 mm (w) (inclusive of crown suspension), weighing 67.8 grams (inclusive of ribbon), with light enamel wear and minor loss to laurels, on period neck ribbon, very fine.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
