"Spain; An untouched example in bronze gilt with red, white and green enamels, text in black on both centrepieces, unmarked, 27 mm (w) x 40.3 mm (h) inclusive of its wreath suspension, incorrect replacement ribbon, intact enamels, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Cross for the Defenders of Zaragoza was issued to those who participated in the defence of the plaza at Zaragoza, when Carlist forces launched a surprise offensive on March 5, 1838. The defence was composed of National Militia supported by some regular troops, and even civilians armed with such improvised weapons as burning oil and water, in imitation of the greater sieges of the Peninsula War. Carlist casualties were about twenty times those of its opposition, the defenders rewarded with the issuing of this cross."

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
