(Orden de la Cruz de San Raimundo de Peñafort). Instituted 1944 by General Francisco Franco. 1944-present issue. An enameled white Maltese Cross with ball finials in silvered bronze, featuring a split inscription S RAYMUNDUS / PENNAFORTI (St. Raymond of Peñafort) on the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock arms, respectively, presenting ornamented laces in each quadrant with a vertical sword also in bronze silvered, obverse centre featuring an enameled pink, blue, and red superposed figure of St. Peñafort in bronze gilt, with an enameled blue beneath ribbon inscribed by the Latin inscription IN JURE MERITA, with plain reverse, measuring 48.41 mm (w) x 52.29 mm (h - inclusive of integral ball), with toned bronze and stained enamels, accompanied by original ribbon, suspended from a traditional Spanish horizontal hanger with pinback, fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
