Spain, Spanish State. A Commemorative Silver Plaque for the 35th Anniversary of Franco’s Appointment as Generalissimo
A rare and exquisite commemorative plaque, constructed of silver and riveted to a lacquered dark brown wooden base, the obverse bearing a raised and exceptionally detailed depiction of a memorial erected in Salamanca commemorating Francisco Franco’s 1 October 1936 appointment as Generalissimo of Spain as Franco consolidated leadership over Nationalist forces during the early months of the Spanish Civil War, with the stone centrepiece bearing a carefully engraved, partially abbreviated dedication of "AQUÍ FUE DESIGNADO GENERALÍSIMO DE LOS EJÉRCITOS Y JEFE DEL ESTADO EL EXCELENTÍSIMO SEÑOR DON FRANCISCO FRANCO BAHAMONDE, 1. 10. 1936" (“HERE, HIS EXCELLENCY MR. FRANCISCO FRANCO BAHAMONDE WAS APPOINTED GENERALISSIMO OF THE ARMIES AND HEAD OF STATE, 10. 1. 1936”), superimposed over a forested background, topped by an engraved dedication of “SALAMANCA A SU CAUDILLO” (“SALAMANCA TO ITS CAUDILLO”), in turn topped by an 18 Karat Gold and enameled coat of arms, in turn flanked by engraved dates “1936-1971”, the lower left corner featuring an etched maker’s mark for the Salamanca firm of Cordón, indicating fine jeweller-quality construction, a five-pointed star indicating 915 silver content, and an unidentified hallmark, the featuring a stand on a swivel hinge, bearing an additional Cordón label, measuring 27 cm (w) x 33 cm (h), the silver plate demonstrates minor tarnishing and the stand hinge has lost one of its four rivets which has compromised its integrity, a superb piece commemorating one of the key developments of the Spanish Civil War and subsequent national history in near extremely fine condition.
