(瑞宝章). Instituted January 4, 1888 by Emperor Meiji. Showa Period (1926-1989). A superb Second War period I Class Grand Cordon set, comprising the badge, in silver, with four white enamelled arms each consisting of four individual rays alternating between silver and silver gilt borders, between each cluster sits a small blue enamelled ray, the obverse medallion presents a silver symbol of Yata Mirror on a dark blue enamelled field, surrounded by a pebbled and then smooth ring, together with red glass surround representing the legendary Yasakani jewels affixed by four rivets, the reverse is plain with a central inscription and four rivets , measures 63.55 mm (w) x 70.25 mm (h - inclusive of integral ball), weighs 66.7 grams, enamels intact, minimal gilt wear, in extremely fine condition. The Star of the order, in silver, features a white enamelled eight-armed cross in silver, each arm featuring cluster of five silver-framed rays of different sizes, the obverse centre in silver gilt exhibiting a legendary silver Japanese symbol of Yata Mirror, with nicely enamelled blue background, surrounded by 16 connected red cabochon glasses representing the legendary Yasakani jewels, plain reverse with principal pin assembly flanked by two stays, as well as central Order’s Japanese characters, measuring 74.60 mm (w) x 74.4 mm (h), weighs 95.5 grams, light hairline cracks in enamels, scattered gilt wear, hinge and catch functional, a rare class of this order, in extremely fine condition.
Accompanied by a full length watered silk sash, with rosette, in extremely fine condition. Also included is a miniature lapel button presenting a rosette of the order.
Contained in its case of issue, comprising a black lacquered exterior with gilt characters on the lid, the interior presents a rich purple silk lid, with a purple partially movable velvet recessed medalbed for the badge and star, with a visible storage compartment for the sash below, the case measures 130 mm (w) x 255 mm (l) x 70 mm (d), very minor contact, hinge and clasp functional, in extremely fine condition.
The set and case are held within a wooden box with contemporary photos of the set adhered to the exterior, the box measures 160 mm (w) x 290 mm (l) x 85 mm (d), minor wear, in extremely fine condition.
