Russia, Imperial. A Commemorative Medal for the 1813 Crossing of the Rhine
Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing a raised and leftward-facing profile of Tsar Alexander I in medieval armour and wielding a spear with an ornately-decorated shield executed in high relief, circumscribed by a Russian Cyrillic inscription of “РОДОМЫСЛЪ ДЕВЯТАГОНАДЕСЯТЬ ВѢКА” (“RODOMYSL OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY”), the reverse bearing a raised depiction of a medieval Russian warrior clutching a sword and shield, with his back to a seated male figure leaning against a spilling urn (symbolizing the Rhine), topped by an inscription of “CROSSING THE RHINE” in Cyrillic, above a date of “1813”, engraver marked “Г . ТОЛСТОВА” (“G. TOLSTOVA”) and “А . ЛЯЛИНЪ” (“A. LYALIN”), with a manufacture date of “1835”, measuring 64.93 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
