Russia, Imperial. A Table Medal the General Pardon of Prisoners on the Accession of Empress Elizabeth, by Georg Christian Waechter, 1741
Constructed of silvered zink, the obverse bearing a raised and rightward-facing bust of Empress Elizabeth, circumscribed by name and title in Latin, the reverse bearing a central raised depiction of female figure representing the personification of mercy, loosening the chains of a group of prisoners, situated in front of a prison with open doors through which prisoners are exiting, below a Latin inscription of “CLEMENTIA AUGUSTÆ” indicating an imperial clemency, above an inscription which has been rendered illegible, the obverse maker marked “G. WAECHTER” for medallist Georg Christian Waechter, measuring 64.67 mm in diameter, with minimal age-appropriate oxidation evident, in better than very fine condition.
