Instituted 1687. A simply superb and exceedingly rare collar badge in Gold, presenting the figure of Saint Andrew in a finely enameled green gown while clutching a white enameled white saltire, delicately hand painted features, with an aureola surround in Gold with individual hand etched rays, aureola affixed by pin atop Saint Andrews head as well as attachment point at base, with wide integral loop, maker marked "T.H" likely denoting manufacture by Thomas Harper II between 1806-1832, measuring 39 mm (w) x 68 mm (h), 82.8 grams, with enamel loss, fine and rare. Footnote: A similar badge in both stylistic characteristics and composition is held at the National Museum of Scotland. It was manufactured by John James Edington, London 1825-26.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
