Instituted 1861 by Queen Victoria. A superb and desirable order, consisting of a neck badge in Gold, obverse centre presenting the left facing onyx cameo of Queen Victoria on an amber background, a blue enamel surround is overlaid with the Motto of the order HEAVENS'S LIGHT OUR GUIDE, the motto carefully crafted in diamonds within a silver setting, an ornate Gold outer setting with four ornate floral gatherings, suspended from a five pointed star featuring a hand etched diamond design, measuring 52 mm (w) x 64 mm (h - inclusive of integral Gold ring) with silver star measuring 28 mm (w) x 25 mm (h), total weight of 49.3 grams, with original neck ribbon and typical Garrard & Co Gold elongated loop, extremely fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, in silver, featuring a stylized eight arm star, each arm composed of multiple individual rays, obverse centre presenting a five pointed silver star featuring a hand etched diamond design, on a background of Gold with radiating from centre, with a blue and white enamels ribbon surround, overlaid with the Motto of the order HEAVENS'S LIGHT OUR GUIDE, the motto carefully crafted in diamonds within a silver setting, reverse with principle pin assembly, Gold pin, measuring 84 mm (w) x 84.5 mm (h), in finely toned silver, missing single diamond from first "H" in motto, otherwise, extremely fine. Housed within case of issue, wood framed and wrapped in typical black cloth, lid embossed with gilt lettering K.C.S.I., interior lid maker marked Garrard & Co, Ltd., velvet medal bed, and silk coverings, near very fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
