Footnote: St. Bernard of Menthon (923-1008) was an Italian religious figure. He was proclaimed patron saint of mountaineers and climbers by Pius XI in 1923. The Catholic Church celebrates a liturgical feast in his honour each year on June 15. Sappada is a commune (municipality) in the Province of Belluno in the Italian region of Veneto, located about 130 km north of Venice in Northern Italy.
