LUDLOW, MADRAS ENGrs). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, light contact, better than very fine.Footnote: Major General Samuel Edgar Owen Ludlow began his military career as a Cadet at the East India Company's Military Seminary at Addiscombe in 1829-1830. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Madras Engineers in 1830, and later, as a Lieutenant in 1839 and as a Captain in 1854. Ludlow served during the Indian Mutiny with the Kamptee Moveable Column and was present during the taking of the fortified village of Balacote on September 1, 1857 and the capture of Fort Nursinghur on September 17th. He was promoted to Major and was involved in the engagement at Goba with the mutineers of the 52nd Bengal Native Infantry and the Bandoolas on September 27th. In the new year, he served with the Central India Field Force in January 1858 and began the advance on Banda, in addition to being present at the attack on Jheechung on April 10th. The following week, he was at the affair with the outposts of Banda Namal's army at Kubraee on April 17th and at the battle to capture Banda on the 19th. On June 5th, he was present at the surrender of Kirwee. After the Mutiny was concluded, he saw four promotions in rank in the early 1860s: to Lieutenant Colonel, Royal Engineers (May 1860), to Lieutenant Colonel, Madras Engineers (February 1861), to Colonel, Madras Engineers (April 1863) and retired as a Major General on September 1, 1863. Ludlow died on June 7, 1888 at Richmond, Surrey, England. He received two identical Indian Mutiny Medals with clasps for Central India. One is named to him as Captain & Brevet Major, Madras Engineers, the other is named to him as Major, Madras Engineers.
