The Brigade, composed mostly of Polish volunteers, was named in honour of General Jaroslaw Dabrowski (1836-1871), who fell in defense of Paris during the Paris Commune of 1871. The Medal for Your Freedom and Ours was issued in 1956 and was awarded to all former members of the XIII International Brigade who fought in Spain on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939.
