Distinguished Flying Medal, George VI IND: IMP: 1939-1949 (1396499 F/SGT E.F.R. FRANCIS. R.A.F.); 1939-1945 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal; War Medal 1939-1945; General Service Medal 1918-1962, George VI crowned profile with FID: DEF, 1 Clasp - MALAYA (PLT. OFF. E.F.R. FRANCIS. R.A.F.); and Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal 1953. Naming is officially engraved on the DFM, the naming on the GSM engraved. Un-mounted, dark patinas on the obverse of the three silver medals, very light contact, original ribbons with residue evident from previous board mounting, near extremely fine.

 

Footnote: 139499 Flight Sergeant Eric Frederick R. Francis was a Navigator aboard a Mosquito VI, with No. 169 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and is credited with three night kills, along with one damaged aircraft. The announcement for his Distinguished Flying Medal (jointly with 1334382 Warrant Officer Leslie William Turner, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, D.F.C.) appears in the Fifth Supplement to the London Gazette 36847 of Friday, December 15, 1944, on Monday, December 19, 1944, page 5813: "1396499 Flight Sergeant Eric Frederick Reginald Francis, R.A.F.V.R., 169 Sqn. As pilot and observer respectively, Warrant Officer Turner and Flight Sergeant Francis have completed many operational missions. They have displayed exceptional keenness and devotion to duty and have shot down 3 enemy aircraft at night. Their successes are an excellent tribute to their great skill and fine fighting spirit." For his Second War service, he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. Post Second War, he would see action in Malaya and Singapore against communist guerrilla forces, earning him the General Service Medal 1918-1962 with Malaya clasp. He was also a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal in 1953.
