Two-piece construction, Dorsetshire Regiment insignia in silver with blue enamels, mounted to a silver u-shaped cover, the front and back covers with a wide band in the centre bearing a repeating wavy pattern, flanked by narrow bands on either side bearing a repeating diamond pattern, the front cover incorporating a vertical rectangular box which is un-initialled, stamped "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the spine, measuring 49.3 mm (w) x 79 mm (h) x 18 mm (d), intact enamels, light contact and tarnishing, better than very fine.
Footnote: During the First World War, nine hostilities-only battalions were formed, six battalions serving overseas. The 1st Battalion and 6th (Service) Battalion served on the Western Front throughout most of the war. Additional battalions (1/4th Battalion, 2/4th Battalion and 3/4th Battalion) were formed as part of the Territorial Force, to meet the demand for troops on the Western Front.
