S/M., J.S. SMITH. R. I. RIFLES.); British War Medal (10456 SJT. J.S. SMITH. R. IR. RIF.); Victory Medal (10456 SJT. J.S. SMITH. R. IR. RIF.); Defence Medal; and Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (SGt J.S. SMITH. 1st R.I.R:). Naming is erased and crudely re-engraved on the IM, QSAM, KSAM and ALSGCM, the naming on the QSAM inverted, privatedly re-engraved on the 1914 Star and officially impressed on the BWM and VM, the DM is un-named as issued. Mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback, as worn by the veteran, the silver medals with dark patinas, the top two clasps on the QSAM not joined to the other five clasps, original ribbons, very fine.
Footnote: The First War Index Card for Sergeant John S. Smith, Royal Irish Rifles indicates that he was entitled to the 1914 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, that his qualifying date was July 22, 1915 and that he was assigned to the Balkans.
