It is divided into six parts, the first five parts incorporating sixteen chapters: Part I - History of the Clan System, with four chapters (I - Ancient Alba and the Rise of the Highland Clan System - 400 B.C. to A.D. 1286; II - The Highlands and Clanship under the House of Bruce; III - The Highland Clan System under the Royal Stewarts and down to the Battle of Culloden; IV - The Highlands after Culloden); Part II - Structure of the Clan System, with four chapters (V - The Clan System Described; VI - The Law of the Clan; VII - The Clans of the Scottish Highlands; VIII - The Septs of the Highland Clans); Part III - Celtic Culture, with five chapters (IX - The Highland Garb; X - The Tartan; XI - Highland Surnames and Titles; XII - Highland Music; XIII - The Gaelic and Celtic Languages); Part IV - Highland Forces, with one chapter (XIV - The Highland Regiments, Past and Present); Part V - Clan Insignia and Heraldry, with two chapters (XV - Armorial Bearings in the Clan System; XVI - Notes on the Plates of Clan Tartans). It concludes with thirty-two Appendices, a List of Colour Plates of Tartans, a List of Clans in Order of Precedence and a four page Index, followed by 112 colour plates of Tartans and a fold-out colour Clan Map of Scotland placed on the last page behind the endpaper on the inside back cover. The book contains 632 pages of text, printed in black ink on an off-white paper stock, complemented by seventeen black and white plates of illustrations and fifty-six colour plates of tartans on a coated paper stock, measuring 140 mm (w) x 220 mm (h) x 45 mm (d). It exhibits pinching on the lower corners on the front and back covers, ink marks evident on the sides of the pages, with smudges present on a few pages near the front of the book, the majority of the pages unaffected.
