Queen’ South Africa Medal with RELIEF OF LADYSMITH, TUGELA HEIGHTS, and CAPE COLONY clasps, in silver, rim impressed 3885 PTE R. FARNELL. 2ND ROYAL FUS., worn on replacement ribbon, minimal wear, in extremely fine condition.

King’s South Africa Medal with SOUTH AFRICA 1902 and SOUTH AFRICA 1901 clasps, in silver, rim impressed 3885 PTE R. DARNELL. RL: FUSILIERS., worn on replacement ribbon, minimal wear, in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: Richard William Darnell was born in Holloway, London. Prior to enlisting at the age 18, he was employed as a Beer Battler. He signed his attestation paper on September 7, 1891. He served a total of 12 years, split between home, army reserve, and Africa. He served as assistant instructor army signalling Aldershot on June 3, 1893. In February 1894, he was promoted to Corporal. Between 1899 to 1902, Darnell served in South Africa. During this time, his rank was reduced on several occasions, as he was convicted of conduct to the prejudice of good order. He was discharged on September 6, 1903. Darnell died of broncho-pneumonia at Archway Hospital on August 4, 1938.
