Type III (1904-1913) Replacement Issue. Bronze gilt with green enamels, engraved in running script "Pvt Alvin A. Ford, Co. D, 27th Me. Inf." on the reverse, 38 mm (w) x 55.7 mm inclusive of its eagle and VALOR suspension, original ribbon with thirteen embroidered stars, scattered gilt wear, accompanied by a full-length original neck ribbon incorporating a bronze loop in the centre and a dual prong buckle closure on the left end, along with a 10 mm x 30 mm Ribbon Bar and a 12.2 mm x 13.5 mm Rosette. Near extremely fine.
Footnote: Private Alvin A. Ford was born July 20, 1839 in Berwick, Maine. He was a resident of Berwick when he enlisted with Company D, 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment fort service during the Civil War. He was married to Delphine A. Ford (born August 31, 1848), the couple having a son, W. Irving Ford (1862-1890). Alvin A. Ford was re-issued with a replacement medal, the Type III version as presented here. He died on November 18, 1923, at the age of 84, his wife Delphine passing away the following year, on March 9, 1924, at the age of 75. They and their son are buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. (C:41)
