Likely of Bailey, Biddle & Banks manufacture, this purple heart is in bronze gilt and enamels, the obverse presenting a left facing bust of George Washington on a purple enamelled heart, the reverse is privately engraved GEORGE W. SCHUSTER, the left rim is numbered 17598, worn on an original ribbon with split wrap brooch and a horizontal pin with a lock catch, measures 34.5mm (w) x 46.1mm (h – inclusive of the integral suspension), weighs 35.7 grams (including ribbon), evident bubbling and flaking of enamel, edge bruising and small knocks to edges, ribbon stiff, in near very fine condition.
Footnote: Bailey, Biddle & Banks had a contract with the United States for creating purple hearts between 1932 -1940, retroactively awarding those who served during the First World War. These purple hearts were numbered 1-60000 and were worn on a split wrap brooch.
