Type I. In bronze gilt, obverse illustrating a left-facing American soldier standing on a parapet, an ocean scene with emanating rays in the sky in the background, reverse illustrating a downward-pointing sheathed sword backed by the inscription ""TO ONE WHO SERVED THE NATION WITH HONOR 1898-1899-1900"", engraved ""8987"" in the name plate below, surrounded by the inscription ""AWARDED BY THE STATE OF NEW YORK"", measuring 34 mm, replacement incorrect ribbon, edge nicks, contact marks, spotting, very fine.

Footnote: The Adjutant General was instructed to prepare a campaign badge and distribute it to the officers and enlisted men who served honorably in the army or navy during the Spanish, Philippine and China campaigns, and who enlisted from the State of New York. An amount of $3,000 was appropriated for this purpose. In addition to regular army and navy personnel, New York provided fifteen infantry regiments, two cavalry troops and three light batteries for Spanish war service for a total of 18,000 men. The medal was issued in two sizes, initially at 34 mm (Type I with a red, yellow and purple ribbon), which was later changed to 39 mm (Type II with a blue and yellow ribbon). 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
