United States; Two-piece construction, bronze gilt with purple, red, white and green enamels, engraved "ARNO M. HESS" on the reverse, 34 mm x 42.7 mm, original ribbon with brooch pinback, intact enamels, near mint. Accompanied by its 11 mm x 35.5 mm ribbon bar with pinback, in its hardshelled case of issue, marked "PURPLE HEART" on the lid, spotting evident on the exterior, lightly soiled medal bed, case better than very fine. Also included is a letter from Roland Walsh, Brigadier General, USA, Commanding, Army Services Forces in Philadelphia, addressed to the recipient, "Arno M. Hess, Sr., / 24 Lawton Road / Riverside, Illinois", with the inscription "THE PURPLE HEART DECORATION IN THIS PACKAGE HAS BEEN SENT TO YOU UPON AUTHORITY OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL OF THE ARMY".
