WWI Victory Medal to the 87th Infantry Battalion CEF- (178169 A.C.S. MJR. W.E.S. MC NAIR.). Naming is officially impressed. Contact marks and gilt wear, better than fine. Footnote: William Eli Sanford McNair was born on July 24, 1887 in New Richmond, Quebec. He signed his Attestation Paper as a Private with the 87th Infantry Battalion "Canadian Grenadier Guards", on December 11, 1915 in Saint John, New Brunswick, at the age of 28, naming his next-of-kin as his father, Archibald McNair of Sainte-Therese, Quebec, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Traveller. The Battalion was raised in Quebec with mobilization headquarters at Montreal under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed on April 25, 1916 from Halifax, Nova Scotia, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel J.P. Rexford with a strength of 36 officers and 1,026 other ranks. The Battalion served in France and Belgium with the 11th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division. While in Europe, McNair was named Sergeant, and later, Acting Company Sergeant Major.
