Footnote: James Dewar was born on April 16, 1894 in Fifeshire, Scotland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Dewar of Hamilton, Ontario. He signed his Attestation Paper as a Private with the 19th Infantry Battalion, on November 11, 1914 in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 20, naming his next-of-kin as his father, James Dewar, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Laborer. The Battalion was raised and mobilized in Toronto, Ontario under the authority of G.O. 36, March 15, 1915. The Battalion sailed on May 13, 1915 with a strength of 41 officers and 1,075 other ranks under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel J.J. McLaren. The Battalion served in France and Belgium with the 4th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division. Dewar died on September 11, 1916, at the age of 22, during the Second Phase of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Contalmaison, Somme, France, Grave Reference: II. A. 26. and is commemorated on page 77 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
